Frequently Asked Questions

quaver I haven't sung in a choir before. Is there an audition?
There is no formal audition. The voice you will sing will be decided by the range and timbre of your voice, but you will have to be certain that you are able to sing accurately and are in the right voice range. A reasonable standard of sight-singing is preferable.

quaver How many concerts to Medici choir do each year?
Medici choir perform three concerts in a season: our singing term starts in September, January and April (roughly according to academic terms). See the website to find out when the next singing term starts.
New members are welcome to join within the first three weeks of term to sing in the performance. If you join after week 4, you may need to speak to our musical director as to whether you can sing in the performance. This depends on your familiarity with the piece or if you are prepared to make up in your own time for rehearsals you've missed.

quaver What kind of music do Medici choir sing?
Our repertoire is varied - generally we aim to sing one major choral work from each of the baroque, classical and romantic periods in a season.
We also sing new compositions and arrangements by our musical director, so it's a real mix. See our concert history to find out what we've been up to recently.

quaver When are the rehearsals?
Rehearsals start at 7pm promptly, finishing around 9pm. There's a coffee break about halfway through. As we get closer to the performance, rehearsals are often extended to 9.30pm or, in the last two weeks before the performance, to 10pm depending on how hard the piece is!

quaver How much does it cost?
The subscription fee each term is £58 (£36 concessionary rate available on request for singers aged 25 and under, full-time students, unemployed or over-60s reliant solely on state pension. Please speak to the choir secretary.) To encourage singers to pay early, fees are reduced by 10 if paid within the first two weeks of term. This fee covers administration costs for rehearsals during term as well as sheet music and refreshments. You will also need to pay for any vocal scores we are using in the term: it's generally around 10, depending on the piece we're singing.

quaver Do I have to sell tickets?
The success of any concert depends on a combination of musical preparedness and having a sizeable audience to sing to. Both rely entirely on members' commitment and enthusiasm! Tickets cost around 12 (10 concessions for students) and are available for sale six weeks before the concert. All choir members are expected to sell a minimum of two tickets for concerts.

quaver I'd like to join but I'm going away for two weeks during term. Can I still become a member?
The ideal is to attend every rehearsal but we know that work responsibilities may render this impossible. Members should be aware that if they miss more than two rehearsals in a term they will need permission of the Musical director to sing in that term's concert.

quaver Where do you sing?
Rehearsals take place in the Church of Scotland, Crown Court, Covent Garden. Our concerts take place in venues in central London, such as St Giles-in-the-Fields, St Martin-in-the-Fields, St Sepulchre-without-Newgate and St Margaret's Church, Westminster Abbey.
